The photograph I didn't make in time

A tighter woodland frame, a leaning trunk among uprights, an oak lower right, low evening sun on the foliage behind.

Serenity in the Woods, Issue #7

I was in a wood I am still getting to know, at work on a composition, when the light came through for a few minutes and caught the trees behind the one I was framing. I knew something in the picture was not quite right, and I could not say why.

Then the light went, and in the quiet after it I saw the better picture I had been missing: the same trees, held tighter. Too late for the light. It did not come back.

This piece is about what I have come to make of an evening like that: why I do not call it a loss, and what the light leaving actually asked of me. The whole of it is on the site.

Subscribers to Serenity in the Woods now also get a short private note from the woods each week, a small observation that does not appear anywhere else.

Serenity in the woods.

For photographers who sense there is more to the woods than the epic view. Years of returning to the same quiet woods, distilled into unhurried notes on seeing, composing and editing, and essays on why the making matters more than the picture.
